Welcome to Belgo

Welcome to the website for Belgo - the virtual home of the world's greatest Belgian restaurants. Here we tell you where your nearest Belgo is, give you the menus to peruse, let you catch up with all the latest news and generally celebrate all things Belgiany.

01. Beer

Obviously. Belgium produces hundreds of varieties and exports thousand of gallons. Much of it to us.

Mussels

Not necessarily a Belgian thing but yummy all the same and work particularly well with beer – see point 1

Hercule Poirot

Agatha Christie’s famous detective is really good at solving crimes in unusual and exotic locations e.g. the Orient Express, the Nile. Best avoided as being in his vicinity is highly likely to result in an unpleasant death.

Tintin

Herge’s comicbook creation who was best friends with Captain Haddock, Snowy and the Thompson Twins. Not to be confused with 80’s popstar Stephen ‘Tintin’ Duffy who might also have been friends with the Thompson Twins.

Jean Claude Van Damme

Van Damage is the star of too many generally terrible action films to count. The plots normally follow the same arc – bad guys do bad things, JCVD turns up and slaps bad guys about, bad guys are vanquished, JCVD get the girl, release to uninterested public, go straight to DVD, repeat. But hey, he’s Belgian! Click here to see him at the top of his game.

Chocolate

Belgium makes alot of chocolate – 172,000 tonnes a year to be exact.

Belgo Bill

The rosy faced chap with the sausages round his neck and the national emblem of all things Belgo. We admit he’s probably not that big in Belgium but he’s loved by us so that gets him into the top 10.

Justine Henin

Top woman tennis player who brings some style and class into a sport epitomised by power and grunting. Kim Clijsters is Belgian too but she doesn’t win so much and is a bit more grunty.

Plastic Bertrand

Belgium’s contribution to pop music. In 1973 their ‘Ca Plane Pour Moi’ reached number 8 in the UK charts.

Radios

Apparently the CIA estimates that there are 8 million radios in Belgium. With a population of just over 10 million that means 4 out of 5 people own a radio. And none of them are listening to Terry Wogan
